Gastric Balloon Procedure
This is a non-surgical, non-pharmaceutical aid in the treatment of obesity. A smooth and adjustable silicone balloon is placed endoscopically into the stomach, taking up around one-third of the space. This acts by creating a feeling of fullness and in turn reducing hunger and food intake.
After an initial endoscopy to check for any abnormality, the deflated balloon is inserted with the endoscope into the stomach and is then filled with saline upto 400-700cc.
This procedure usually takes around 20-30mins. The balloon can be left in place for 1 year after which it is removed endoscopically. Usually, around 5-10% of the excess weight is lost with this procedure.
This is preferred in overweight patients who wish to lose around 10-15 kgs; or in super obese patients that are unfit for surgery. It is a good noninvasive alternative to bariatric surgery.
